Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and a former Major League Baseball pitcher, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Tyler, Texas on Saturday, February 3.

This incident is at least the third DWI charge for Mahomes Sr., as confirmed by jail records. His arrest precedes his son, Patrick Mahomes II’s, leadership role in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

Mahomes Sr., 53, was booked into the Smith County Jail on Saturday. Following the posting of a $10,000 surety bond, he was released on Sunday. His prior legal encounters include a 2018 DWI conviction, resulting in a 40-day jail sentence served on weekends, highlighting a recurring issue with such offenses.

Reporters questioned the Chiefs’ prominent player about his father and his detention during a media event at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Mahomes answered the question, although he mentioned his reluctance to extensively discuss the arrest, saying it was a personal family matter.

“He’s doing good,” the star quarterback said. “I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is.”

Throughout his 11-season MLB career from 1992 to 2003, Mahomes Sr. pitched for several teams, including the Minnesota Twins, and Boston Red Sox, among others. He notably participated in the 1999 National League playoffs with the Mets. Beyond his athletic achievements, he has made a name in media, hosting “The Big Mahomes Show,” a podcast that delves into professional sports intricacies.

The timing of Mahomes Sr.’s arrest poses a personal challenge for Patrick Mahomes II as he aims for another Super Bowl title with the Chiefs. Incidents involving relatives often receive unpopular public and media attention.

Given that this is his third DWI charge, Mahomes Sr. could face stringent penalties if convicted, potentially ranging from two to ten years in prison, underscoring the severe consequences of repeat DWI offenses in Texas.

Mahomes Sr. has three children: sons Patrick Mahomes II and Jackson Mahomes with ex-wife Randi Martin, and daughter Zoe Mahomes from a later relationship.
