Popular Actor’s Sudden Passing at 48 Shocks Fans

Chris Gauthier, a renowned English-born Canadian actor best known for his memorable roles in popular television series such as “Once Upon a Time” and “Smallville,” died on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the age of 48. His unexpected death, following a brief illness, has left fans and many in the entertainment community in mourning.

According to a statement from Gauthier’s talent agency, TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent, and his manager, the actor was celebrated for his work as a beloved Vancouver-based character actor. His contributions to television and film were widely appreciated by audiences and deeply valued by those who had the privilege of knowing him personally. 

Both his manager and talent agency have requested privacy for Gauthier’s family during this challenging time.

Chad Colvin, a representative from TriStar Appearances, shared his shock and sorrow on social media, stating that the news of Gauthier’s passing brought him to tears for hours. 

Colin O’Donoghue, who co-starred with Gauthier in “Once Upon a Time,” expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, extending his condolences to Gauthier’s wife, Erin, and their two sons, Ben and Sebastian. O’Donoghue remembered Gauthier not just as a colleague but as a brother and a “real captain,” highlighting the strong bonds formed during their time together on set.

Gauthier’s career showcased his versatility with roles across television and film. Notably, his portrayal of Smee in “Once Upon a Time” stood out, alongside other significant roles in series like “Eureka,” “Supernatural,” “Harper’s Island,” “Sanctuary,” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” His filmography includes “Freddy vs. Jason,” “Agent Cody Banks,” and “40 Days and 40 Nights.”

Adam Horowitz, a co-showrunner of “Once Upon a Time,” also paid tribute to Gauthier, describing him as a kind, sweet, and talented person whose passing leaves a void in the entertainment industry and in the hearts of those who knew him.

Gauthier was also renowned for his roles in a series of Hallmark Christmas movies such as The Christmas Promise, Three Wise Men and a Baby, and the recent Ms. Christmas Comes to Town, which debuted last October. Representatives of the Hallmark Channel expressed condolences through an Instagram post.

Brennan Elliott, Gauthier’s co-star in Ms. Christmas Comes to Town, shared his grief on Instagram, mentioning his disbelief and the short but impactful time they spent together during the film’s three-week shoot. 

Elliott praised Gauthier for his talent and kindness, noting the loss of such a “beautiful soul” at the young age of 48. He credited Gauthier for significantly contributing to the success of Ms. Christmas Comes to Town, underscoring his appreciation for Gauthier’s presence and impact.

Born on January 27, 1976, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, Gauthier moved to Canada, where he built a successful acting career and became a familiar face on both the small and big screens. His work earned him acclaim and a place in the hearts of viewers worldwide.
