Prince Harry’s Future as a Royal

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is said to be feeling unsettled in Montecito, California, where he resides with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The 39-year-old Duke and his family relocated from his native London to California in January 2020, following their decision to step down as senior members of the British royal family. Tom Quinn, an author who writes about the royal family, suggests that Prince Harry is finding life in the palm-tree-lined city dull and misses his royal duties.

Quinn, the author of “Queen Mary to Meghan Markle,” mentioned to the Mirror that being a royal is all Prince Harry knows, and that to maintain his global interest and value, it would be better if he did not retire from his royal duties. He added that the Duke has considered making more regular trips back to the United Kingdom, especially as his father, King Charles, battles cancer.

Earlier this month, Prince Harry made a swift visit back to the UK following the global news of his father’s illness. Quinn noted that the prince was visibly shocked and upset at the news of King Charles’s illness, having assumed his father would live as long as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, despite their ups and downs. The queen passed away at 96 in September 2022, and the Duke of Edinburgh died at 99 in 2021.

According to Quinn, Prince Harry understands that he will never be allowed to be a part-time working royal, splitting his time between the US and the UK. He cites distrust from the family and Meghan’s opposition as reasons. During an interview on “Good Morning America,” Prince Harry informed host Will Reeve that he plans to return to England soon.

While on the show, which aired on Feb. 16, Prince Harry stated that he has considered US citizenship, but it was not a priority. As per the US Citizen and Immigration Services policy, he would have to renounce his royal status should he apply for US citizenship. The law states that any applicant with hereditary titles or noble positions from any foreign state must renounce them.
