Carl Weathers, the actor best remembered for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” film series, died from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a report released on Friday, February 9, 2024.
Weathers passed away in his sleep just after midnight on February 2, 2024, at his home in Venice, California. He was 76 years old. Weathers’ death was announced by his family, who remembered him as an “exceptional human being” who lived an “extraordinary life.”
This condition, which he had battled for years, led to his peaceful passing, marking the end of an extraordinary life filled with notable contributions to film, television, and sports.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is caused by the buildup of fatty deposits narrowing and solidifying the arteries, impeding blood flow and heightening the likelihood of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease due to diminished circulation.
Carl Weathers, born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, first found his path to fame on the football field. He was a college football player at San Diego State University prior to embarking on a professional journey with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in 1970. His time in the NFL was short-lived, featuring in just eight games over two seasons.
However, his transition to acting would cement his legacy in entertainment history and showcase his exceptional talent and versaltility. Weathers’ Hollywood career, spanning over five decades, was marked by diverse roles that demonstrated his wide-ranging talents.
His iconic role as Apollo Creed, first introduced in 1976’s “Rocky”, became a symbol of perseverance and strength, traits that Weathers himself embodied throughout his career. Beyond that role he made a significant impact with his performances in “Predator,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Mandalorian.” From voicing characters in the “Toy Story” franchise to his memorable appearances on “Arrested Development” and his Emmy-nominated performance in “The Mandalorian,” Weathers’ career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for storytelling.
His contributions to the arts extended beyond acting. Weathers also made his mark as a director, including episodes of “The Mandalorian,” demonstrating his versatility and dedication to his craft. His work on “The Mandalorian” earned him an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Before his passing, Weathers had completed a Super Bowl commercial for FanDuel with former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. The ad was aired during the Super Bowl including a special tribute to Weathers.
As the entertainment world continues to honor the memory of Carl Weathers, the most heartfelt tribute emerged from Sylvester Stallone, his longtime friend and co-star in the “Rocky” series.
Stallone’s words offer deep insight into their personal and professional bond.
Following the announcement of his passing, Stallone expressed profound sorrow, noting the day’s extreme sadness.
“It’s hard to express the depth of my grief. I’m doing my best to keep composed. Carl Weathers played a pivotal role in my career and my entire life. I owe him so much,” he remarked, standing before a painting that captured their characters together in combat.
“The moment he entered the room and I laid eyes on him, I recognized his remarkable talent, added Stallone”
Carl Weathers’ career was a blend of athleticism and artistry, leaving a legacy that will endure through his memorable performances and the lives he touched.
