Sunbather Killed by Plane Landing on Beach

A small plane carrying four Canadian skydivers and a Mexican pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on Playa Bachoco, a well-known beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, on Sunday, February 11, 2024.

Tragically, the unplanned landing resulted in the fatality of a 62-year-old Mexican man, Armando D.C., who was vacationing on the beach with his wife at the time of the accident.

Five people, including the four Canadian skydivers, aged 60, 59, 41, and 35, and a 40-year-old Mexican man, suffered injuries. Following treatment at a local hospital, they were reported to be in stable condition.

Initial findings from Civil Protection officials suggested that the plane, a Cessna Caravan operated by Skydive Puerto Escondido, had to perform a forced landing. The specific reasons for this required action remain unclear at this time.

Despite the plane largely remaining intact during the landing, it tragically landed almost directly on Armando D.C., a resident of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. His wife was fortunately not harmed.

The incident has raised questions regarding the safety of skydiving operations and the appropriateness of using public beaches as emergency landing sites. The exact cause of the mechanical failure is currently being investigated by local authorities and aviation officials.

Bacocho Beach, known for its scenic beauty and popularity with tourists, was the unfortunate site of this tragic event, which has sparked public discourse regarding safety and aviation regulations.

Oaxaca’s Governor, Salomón Jara Cruz, offered his condolences and assured support for the victims and their families. He reiterated the state’s dedication to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. The local community and businesses near Playa Bachoco have also rallied to assist those affected by the incident.
