A respected teacher from northwest Indiana, Craig Jones, was discovered dead in a stairwell at East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School in East Chicago, Indiana.
The 47-year-old resident of Gary was found early on the morning of Friday, February 23, 2024, as reported by the East Chicago Police Department.
Jones, a dedicated special education teacher and basketball coach, was known for his commitment to his students. On Thursday, February 22, he reportedly worked late into the night. He contacted his family about his after-hours plans and arranged for a family member to pick him up at 10:30 p.m. However, he did not appear at the agreed-upon time, and the waiting relative eventually left without Jones.
Early the next morning, around 6:40 a.m., the school’s maintenance staff found Jones on a landing in a second-floor stairwell and promptly notified the authorities. The East Chicago Police Department, in cooperation with the Lake County Coroner’s Office, immediately launched an investigation into Jones’ death.
Deputy Coroner Eric Graf stated, “The cause of death is currently under review, with further details pending a full examination.” Despite initial indications of no foul play, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is also involved in the investigation to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding Jones’ death.
A statement released by the East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School expressed their sorrow over the death of Mr. Jones, who they described as a devoted educator committed to his students’ growth and development. The school extended its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and students during this challenging period.
The local authorities have appealed to the public for any information related to Jones’ activities on the night of his death or any unusual events around the school premises. The goal is to put together the sequence of events leading to this unfortunate incident and bring closure to those affected.
