In a legal battle that has garnered attention far beyond the gates of Disney World, Jeffrey Piccolo has initiated a lawsuit against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and the Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant, seeking justice and systemic change after the death of his wife, Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan.

The case, filed in Orange County Circuit Court in Florida, raises critical questions about food safety and allergy awareness in the hospitality industry.

Dr. Tangsuan, 42, a respected physician from New York University Langone Hospital, tragically passed away in October 2023 after dining at Raglan Road, a popular eatery in Disney Springs, Orlando, Florida.

Despite her severe allergies to dairy and nuts and receiving multiple assurances from the restaurant staff that her meal would be safe, 45 minutes after the meal while shopping in Disney Springs, Dr. Tangsuan experienced a severe allergic reaction.

She administered an EpiPen but had trouble breathing and collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as anaphylaxis, indicating “very high” levels of nut and dairy allergens in her system, which were far above safe levels for someone with her allergies, thus classifying her death as accidental.

The lawsuit asserts that both Disney and Raglan Road failed to uphold their commitments to food safety, directly contributing to Dr. Tangsuan’s untimely death. Piccolo, devastated by the loss, is demanding damages exceeding $50,000, aiming not just for compensation but to push for change in the industry’s approach to food allergy safety.

Brian Denney, Piccolo’s attorney, emphasized the broader implications of the lawsuit: “This is not only about seeking justice for a family torn apart by a preventable tragedy but also about ensuring that such negligence does not claim more lives in the future.”

The case highlights a critical issue in the hospitality sector: the need for stringent food safety protocols and comprehensive allergy awareness training for staff. Experts agree that while many establishments claim to offer allergen-free options, the reality is often far different. The tragedy of Dr. Tangsuan’s death serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of such discrepancies.

Food allergy advocates and legal experts are closely watching the case, seeing it as a potential catalyst for change. The hope is that this lawsuit will prompt restaurants and food service providers to adopt more rigorous standards for food safety and allergy awareness, preventing future tragedies.

The hospitality industry, for its part, is at a crossroads. With the increasing prevalence of food allergies among the public, the demand for safe dining options has never been higher. Restaurants and food service operators are being called upon to improve training and protocols to protect guests with food allergies. This includes better communication with guests, thorough training for staff on allergen management, and strict adherence to food safety practices.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Piccolo family’s fight for justice and change continues. Their story is a powerful testament to the impact of one family’s tragedy on sparking a broader movement for safer dining experiences for everyone, regardless of their dietary needs.
