Legendary Emmy And Grammy Winning Singer Dead at 88

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Steve Lawrence, a figure whose contributions to music and television spanned over six decades. Lawrence, who passed away at his home in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 88 due to complications from Alzheimer’s, leaves behind a legacy filled with chart-topping hits, memorable television appearances, and a heartwarming partnership both on and off the stage with his late wife, Eydie Gormé.

Born Sidney Liebowitz in 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, Lawrence’s passion for music was evident from a young age. His father, a cantor in their local synagogue, influenced him. His journey into the spotlight began in the early 1950s, and he quickly made a name for himself, not just as a talented vocalist but as an entertainer who captured the hearts of audiences across the United States.

Lawrence’s career was marked by numerous achievements, including his hit “Go Away Little Girl,” which climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart in 1963. A cover version by Donny Osmond replicated this feat in 1971. His musical prowess was recognized with Emmy and Grammy Awards, celebrating his dynamic range and enduring appeal.

The love story between Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé, whom he met on Steve Allen’s New York late-night show, is one of the entertainment world’s most enduring partnerships. Married in Las Vegas in 1957, the couple not only shared a life together but also a career that saw them perform in sold-out shows across the country, including the iconic Las Vegas stages, and on television, becoming household names through their appearances on “The Tonight Show” and their own variety shows.

David Lawrence, their son, expressed profound sentiments regarding his father, stating, “To many, my father was a source of inspiration. However, for me, he was simply the endearing, attractive, and incredibly humorous man who frequently sang, at times by himself, and at other times alongside his exceptionally gifted wife.” He shared his pride and aspiration that his father’s legacy in the entertainment industry would be cherished for many years.

Steve Lawrence’s career also included notable appearances in films and on Broadway, demonstrating his versatility as a performer. His role in the musical comedy “The Blues Brothers” as the titular brothers’ agent is particularly memorable, showcasing his ability to connect with audiences beyond the music stage.

The singer’s friendships with other legendary artists, including Frank Sinatra, added depth to his career. Sinatra once entrusted Lawrence with his iconic music arrangements to ensure their preservation for future generations. Reflecting on the gesture, Lawrence said, “I was very flattered. He really liked Eydie and me a lot.”

Eydie Gormé’s passing in 2013 marked the end of an era, but Steve Lawrence’s music and the duo’s contributions to the entertainment industry continued to resonate with fans old and new. Lawrence’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, revealed in 2019, brought to light the personal challenges faced by the singer in his final years. Yet, his legacy of music, laughter, and love remains undiminished.

As the entertainment world says goodbye to one of its brightest stars, Steve Lawrence’s music and the memories he created with Eydie Gormé will continue to inspire and entertain future generations.

Steve Lawrence is survived by his son David, daughter-in-law Faye, granddaughter Mabel, brother Bernie, and many extended family members and friends who will continue to cherish his memory.
