Man Killed During Motorcycle Test Drive

A test drive of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at a dealership in Titusville, Florida ended tragically when the rider died following a crash. The incident occurred on Monday, March 25, 2024.

The Titusville Police Department reported that officers were called to the Miracle City Harley-Davidson dealership around 4:15 p.m. following a crash involving a 2014 model. The victim, 68-year-old Richard Peach of Cocoa, was test-driving the bike at a nearby shopping center when he lost control and collided with the exterior wall of an unoccupied storefront. Initial reports indicate that he was wearing a safety helmet and held a legitimate Florida driver’s license with an endorsement for motorcycle operation.

Witnesses observed the motorcycle traveling in the wrong direction on a street adjacent to the dealership before the crash. The rider suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 4:40 p.m. The police confirmed the crash did not involve any other people or vehicles.

One witness, a motorcycle enthusiast, spoke to FOX 35 about the vulnerability of motorcyclists. “You’re completely exposed. In a car, a bump might just dent your door. On a bike, the same bump could cost you a limb,” he explained.

Christopher Maglione, who works near the Titus Landing shopping area, expressed his shock over the accident, noting its unprecedented nature in the plaza. The speed at which the motorcycle was traveling prior to the crash was remarked on by witnesses, although official confirmation of the speed is pending.

The incident raises concerns over motorcycle safety, particularly the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and using protective gear. Florida law on helmet use allows individuals over 21 who have an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred due to a crash while operating or riding on a motorcycle, to opt out of wearing a helmet. This event highlights the potential consequences of choosing not to wear protective headgear.

The ongoing investigation by the Titusville Police Department aims to elucidate the circumstances leading up to the crash. As details emerge, the motorcycling community and the public are reminded of the inherent risks of motorcycle riding and the paramount importance of safety measures.
