Two Dead, Five Injured in Late Night Shooting

A Sunday, March 17, 2024 shooting in Washington, D.C. claimed two lives and left five people injured. The Metropolitan Police Department was called to the scene at the intersection of 7th Street and P Street Northwest adjacent to the Kennedy Recreation Center around 3 a.m.

Upon their arrival, officers found two men with gunshot wounds; both died from their injuries at the scene. An additional four victims, also with gunshot wounds, were found and transported to local hospitals. A fifth victim independently sought medical attention at a hospital for a gunshot wound.

In a press conference, Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department verified that all individuals affected by the incident were adults. The deceased victims have been identified as 32-year-old Anthony Brown of Washington, D.C. and 32-year-old Jay Lucks of Baltimore, Maryland.

The investigation into the shooting has led to a search for a suspect described as a male of average build, last seen wearing a light-colored pair of pants and a blue shirt. The person was observed heading south on 7th Street. While the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, police believe the gunfire was intentional.

In response to the violence, the Metropolitan Police Department has announced a reward of up to $50,000 for any information that results in the arrest and successful prosecution of those accountable.

This shooting occurs amid a significant increase in violent crime in the nation’s capital. According to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for the District of Columbia, gun-related attacks rose by 55% in 2023, marking the deadliest year in two decades. In light of these statistics, the police chief has advocated for legislative changes to enhance penalties for gun-related offenses.

The Kennedy Recreation Center, a community hub offering outdoor sports facilities, a gym, and youth entertainment rooms, is less than two miles from major tourist destinations such as the Penn Quarter and the National Mall. It has been closed for improvements since August, according to the Department of General Services.
