Two young women and a man were found dead in a Miami, Florida apartment complex, victims of an apparent murder-suicide, police reported.
The victims, former college hockey players Sidney Capolino, 23, of Pawling, New York, and Meghan Moore, 25, of Centerville, Massachusetts, were shot dead at their apartment complex in Coral Gables, Miami where they were roommates.
On Saturday evening, March 16, 2024, neighbors reported hearing gunshots at around 9 p.m. Responding police officers discovered Moore gravely injured outside the apartment. As they attempted to provide aid, another gunshot was heard from within the residence. Upon entering, they found Capolino and Luis Nopales, 40, dead from gunshot wounds. All three were residents of the complex.
Nopales, 40, had killed Moore, his former romantic partner, outside the apartment, then entered the residence to fatally shoot Capolino before committing suicide.
According to police, all three lived together.
Moore, a 2021 graduate, and Capolino, who graduated in 2022, were celebrated members of the New England College women’s hockey team. New England College is a private liberal arts school in Henniker, New Hampshire.
The school president, Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr., expressed the community’s collective mourning, stating, “Meghan and Sidney were known to many on campus, and this devastating news deeply saddens us. We pray for Sidney and Meghan’s families and friends.”
The relationship between Moore and Nopales was reported to have been volatile, with friends of Moore indicating that the pair had experienced significant issues. Despite this, the extent of Nopales’s actions could not have been anticipated. “You could tell that there were some issues there,” a college friend of Moore remarked. “But not to this point. We can’t believe this happened.”
Meghan Moore’s brother, 25-year-old Will Moore, struggles to accept the reality of his sister’s abrupt departure. “The reality of it still hasn’t sunk in. It feels utterly surreal,” he expressed.
A 2017 alumna of Barnstable High School, Moore was renowned for her exceptional athletic skills, particularly in varsity hockey. A former teammate and friend, Caroline Spalt reminisced, “With Meghan on the ice, you always felt at ease, knowing she was in the game.”
Post 2021 graduation, Meghan sought new experiences in Miami. It was there, at a restaurant job, that she encountered Napoles, the man accused of her murder. Spalt described Napoles as someone who sought a closer relationship than Meghan was willing to offer, often resorting to obsessive behavior and harassment through various contact methods. Emma Callahan, a close friend, lamented, “No one ever imagines losing their best friend in such a horrific manner.”
Further investigation into Nopales’s background revealed a troubled recent past, including an eviction from a Coral Gables apartment in late 2023 due to non-payment of rent. Nopales had lost his job at a restaurant, which he claimed was the reason for his inability to meet his rent obligations. Despite obtaining a new job, Nopales could not recover financially, leading to his eviction.
Police have not yet revealed a motive and continue to investigate the case.
