College Football Star Dies Suddenly at 25

Amitral “AJ” Simon, a prominent defensive lineman and NFL Draft hopeful from the University of Albany, New York, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 25. His death was confirmed by the university on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, just one week before he was expected to participate in the NFL Draft.

Simon hailed from Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, and will be remembered for his potential on and off the playing field. He had made a pre-draft visit to New England just last week, a sign of his imminent professional prospects.

He had previously attended Bloomsburg University and was a standout athlete during his tenure with the Albany Great Danes, earning significant accolades in his final season. He was recognized as a first-team All-CAA defensive player, a Phil Steele All-CAA first-team selection, and an FCS Football Central First-Team All-American.

Beyond his athletic prowess, Simon was also lauded for his academic achievements, having been named to the 2023 Fall CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, signifying a GPA between 3.0 and 3.7.

The news of Simon’s passing was first announced by the UAlbany football team through its official X account. The statement described Simon as a “tremendous young man and even better teammate,” highlighting his role as a “pillar to this program over the last two years.”

Head football coach Greg Gattuso expressed his sorrow on X, reflecting on the joyous two years he spent coaching and befriending Simon. Gattuso’s tribute emphasized his deep personal connection with Simon, noting, “My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”

Taylor O’Connor, UAlbany’s director of digital content and communications, shared a personal anecdote about Simon’s character and humility. O’Connor recounted interactions with Simon post-season as he prepared for the NFL Draft, saying, “He was always so kind & appreciative of everything I sent him. I joked with him ‘Don’t forget about me when you make it to the NFL!’ He laughed and said ‘Never!'”

Simon’s athletic journey was marked by a notable performance in his final season at UAlbany, where he recorded 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks. This performance helped solidify his position as the 448th prospect in the upcoming NFL draft, according to rankings by ESPN.

The cause of Simon’s death was not disclosed at the time of the announcement. His untimely passing has left his team, friends, family, and the broader university community in mourning.
