In a chilling turn of events that has shocked the Flatbush community, police in Brooklyn, New York, have unraveled a horrific crime involving a dismembered body found in a refrigerator. The gruesome discovery was made in January 2024 after an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers led authorities to a third-floor apartment on Nostrand Avenue, where they were confronted with the disturbing sight.
Nicholas McGee, 45, has been extradited from Virginia and faces charges including murder, robbery, concealment of a human corpse, and tampering with evidence in connection to the death of 39-year-old Kawsheen Gelzer. According to authorities, McGee allegedly killed Gelzer in March 2022 during a heated dispute, then used gruesome methods to conceal his crime. He was arrested on Thursday, April 11, 2024, and is detained without bail.
The investigation began when police were alerted to the possibility of a body being stored in the apartment’s refrigerator. Upon arrival, McGee’s partner, Heather Stines, 45, who resided at the apartment, allowed officers to enter. The officers’ attention was quickly drawn to a conspicuously taped-up refrigerator. Attempts to inspect the fridge led to Stines becoming combative, resulting in her arrest and subsequent charges of concealing a human corpse.
Inside the refrigerator, officers discovered black plastic bags containing what appeared to be human remains, including a head, detailed Joseph Kenny, NYPD’s chief of detectives. The discovery was as shocking as it was tragic, with remnants pieced together to tell the grim story of Gelzer’s end.
Stines later told detectives that the deceased was a local drug dealer who had a falling out with her husband the previous September. She faces charges of first-degree hindering prosecution, concealing a human corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. It is not yet known if she has legal representation. Police investigations revealed the conflict arose over unpaid rent, adding another layer of motive to the already complex case.
One neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed their horror: “It’s something you hear about in movies, not something you expect next door.”
Further details from the investigation highlight a sinister plot where McGee allegedly utilized a saw and hammer to dismember Gelzer’s body, subsequently storing various parts in the refrigerator and freezer, where they remained until the January discovery.
Eric Gonzalez, Brooklyn District Attorney, remarked on the brutality of the crime, saying, “The methods used to conceal the victim’s body were particularly grotesque and demonstrate a shocking disregard for human life.”
As the community reels from the details of this appalling crime, law enforcement continues to piece together the timeline and exact motives behind Gelzer’s murder.
