The hip-hop community mourns the loss of prominent figure Calvin LeBrun, better known as Mister Cee, who passed away at the age of 57.
Mister Cee is renowned for his role as the DJ for Big Daddy Kane and his significant contribution to the rise of The Notorious B.I.G. Chris Oliviero, Market President, confirmed his passing on Wednesday, April 10, saying, “Tonight I share the sad news of the sudden passing of our 94.7 The Block colleague & friend, Mister Cee, a true iconic personality that left a lasting mark on the music and lifestyle culture of New York City and beyond.”
LeBrun, a native of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York first rose to prominence in the hip-hop community for his work on Big Daddy Kane’s 1988 debut album, “Long Live The Kane.” His influence extended beyond music production as he became a popular radio personality at Hot 97, hosting the well-loved shows “Throwback at Noon” and “Friday Night Live.”
His association with Kevin “DJ 50 Grand” Griffin led to his meeting with Christopher Wallace, known as The Notorious B.I.G. LeBrun was crucial in Wallace’s early career, facilitating his first demo recordings that propelled his career forward. He also served as an associate producer on Wallace’s debut 1994 album, “Ready to Die.”
Despite his personal struggles, including arrests related to solicitation of prostitution which prompted public debate on his sexuality, LeBrun maintained respect in the hip-hop circle. These issues led to his departure from Hot 97 in 2014, but he continued his radio career at other stations.
LeBrun’s impactful role in shaping the careers of many hip-hop artists and his enduring influence on New York City’s DJ culture is his lasting legacy. As Hot 97 noted in their statement, his work “shaped the very fabric of NYC’s DJ culture.” He leaves behind a family and a community of fans and fellow musicians who grieve his loss and celebrate his numerous contributions to the music industry.
Expressions of deep sorrow and condolences to his family and fans have been extended by Hot 97 and the wider music community.
