A security guard working outside at rapper Drake’s Toronto mansion was shot early Tuesday morning, May 7, sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. local time at the rapper’s home in the exclusive Bridle Path neighborhood, according to the Toronto Police Service.
The victim, a 48-year-old man, was reportedly shot multiple times in the upper chest during a drive-by shooting. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition.
Police are investigating the shooting and have yet to identify a suspect or determine a motive. However, authorities are aware of the ongoing feud between Drake and fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar and are looking into whether the incident is connected.
“We are aware of the Drake-Lamar beef,” said Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Toronto Police Service during a press conference. “However, a motive has not yet been established.”
Krawczyk also confirmed that investigators are reviewing security camera footage from the area in hopes of identifying the culprit. The footage reportedly captured multiple suspects fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
Drake, a five-time Grammy award winner, was not injured in the shooting. It’s unclear if Drake, 37, was at his residence during the incident. Representatives for the rapper declined to comment when contacted by CNN.
The shooting comes amid a heated exchange of diss tracks between Drake and Lamar. In Lamar’s latest track, he accuses Drake of having a secret daughter and being a gambling addict. Drake has vehemently denied these allegations.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the music industry and has sparked a flurry of online speculation about the motive.
“This is a serious incident and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” Inspector Krawczyk said. “We are asking anyone with information to come forward.”
