Beloved TV Actor Dies at 95

Television pioneer and beloved actor, Terry Carter, known for his roles in the popular series Battlestar Galactica and McCloud, died at the age of 95 on the morning of April 22, 2024, at his residence in New York City. His death concludes a varied and influential career in the entertainment industry that spanned numerous decades.

Carter, whose birth name was John Everett DeCoste, was born on December 16, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. He made his mark in television early on, displaying remarkable determination as one of the earliest Black actors to secure a regular role on a significant TV show. From 1955 to 1959, he portrayed Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show, setting a precedent for a prosperous career and breaking racial boundaries in the entertainment industry, thereby inspiring future generations.

In the 1970s, Carter’s role as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on the TV series McCloud alongside Dennis Weaver brought him additional fame. The show, which aired from 1970 to 1977, was well-received and ran for seven seasons. His role as Colonel Tigh in the 1978 series Battlestar Galactica further expanded his acting range, bringing him recognition in the sci-fi genre.

Beyond his acting roles, Carter was also recognized for his off-screen contributions. He was a respected documentary filmmaker, known for producing an Emmy-nominated documentary on jazz icon Duke Ellington, among other works. His production company, Meta-4 Productions, Inc., was committed to promoting cultural and historical awareness through film.

Carter’s imprint on television extended beyond acting and filmmaking. In 1965, he became the first Black news anchor in New England, serving at Boston, Massachusetts’ WBZ-TV. This role further cemented his multifaceted capabilities and dedication to pioneering in the entertainment and broadcasting sectors.

Carter’s influence in the arts was acknowledged throughout his life, including his board positions at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His legacy in entertainment is underpinned not only by his groundbreaking roles but also by his continuous efforts to foster diversity and understanding through his creative endeavors, a contribution that continues to resonate within the industry.

Survived by his wife, Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, his children, Miguel and Melinda, and a granddaughter, Terry Carter’s family has announced plans for a private memorial in his honor.
