Game of Thrones Actor Dead at 74

Ian Gelder, widely recognized for portraying Kevan Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” has passed away at the age of 74 following a battle with bile duct cancer that began in December. His husband, fellow actor Ben Daniels, announced the heartbreaking news on Instagram.

Daniels expressed his immense sorrow in a heartfelt post, saying, “It is with profound sadness and a shattered heart that I announce the passing of my beloved husband and life partner, Ian Gelder.” He shared that Gelder was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December and passed away on May 6, 2024. “I had stopped working to care for him, but neither of us expected it to happen so quickly.”

The couple had been together since 1993, having first met on the set of the British play “Entertaining Mr. Sloane.” Regarding their 30-year partnership, Daniels called Gelder his “absolute rock,” saying, “He was the kindest, most generous-spirited, and loving person. If we weren’t together, we spoke every day. I honestly don’t know how I’ll continue without him by my side.”

Gelder’s career spanned over five decades, known for his versatile roles in both television and theater. In “Game of Thrones,” he portrayed Kevan Lannister, the younger brother of Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance). Kevan remained loyal to the Lannister legacy until his demise in the fiery explosion at the Great Sept of Baelor in the Season Six finale.

Besides “Game of Thrones,” Gelder was recognized for roles like Mr. Dekker in “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” Charles in “His Dark Materials,” and Zellin in “Doctor Who.” His most recent television appearance was in BBC One’s “Father Brown,” and he was set to feature in upcoming seasons of “Interview With the Vampire” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”

Recalling Gelder’s steadfast courage throughout his illness, Daniels wrote, “He faced this terrible disease with immense bravery, never once showing self-pity. He was extraordinary and will be deeply missed.”

Gelder’s agency, DPA Management, also offered their condolences, stating, “Representing Ian Gelder in the latter part of his career was an absolute pleasure. The world is diminished without him. Ian was an incredible person and a wonderful actor.”

Fellow actor Samuel West paid tribute to Gelder on X, writing, “I’m so sorry to hear of Ian Gelder’s death. He was a marvelous actor and a lovely man.”

Gelder’s enduring legacy as an actor will be remembered fondly by those who knew and worked with him. His versatility and dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on the entertainment world.
