In Coffeyville, Kansas a day meant for celebration turned tragic when 17-year-old Alonzo Juan Juan drowned just hours after graduating from high school. Alonzo, a student at Field Kindley High School, was celebrating with friends at Big Hill Lake in Labette County on May 18, 2024, when the incident occurred.
Alonzo, originally from Guatemala, moved to the United States and joined the school district in middle school. He was recognized for his perseverance and diligence, starting school with only his native Mayan language. “It was a tremendous shock to our community. He was very engaged with his peers. It shows that hard work, dedication, and setting goals are worthwhile. You can achieve them. He exemplified this,” said Lisa Stockton, the district’s ESL program director.
On the day of the tragedy, Alonzo and his friends went to Big Hill Lake to celebrate their high school graduation. The group was enjoying a day of swimming and festivities when the incident occurred. According to local reports, Alonzo was swimming in the lake when he began to struggle and subsequently went under. His friends attempted to help but were unable to reach him in time. Rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, and his body was recovered by that evening. The Labette County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for further details, but they have not yet responded to inquiries about the specific circumstances of the drowning.
A GoFundMe page was set up to assist with funeral expenses and the cost of transporting Alonzo’s body back to his family in Guatemala. The fundraiser has raised over $7,000 towards its $27,000 goal. “He was born on August 21, 2006, and was cherished by many, touching numerous hearts with his kindness and gentle words. This isn’t goodbye but see you later,” the fundraising page states.
Alonzo’s former teacher, Shayla Reliford, spoke about his aspirations, revealing that he had dreams of becoming a doctor. She described him as a diligent and compassionate student who was always willing to help others. “He had so many dreams and so much potential. This loss is felt deeply by all who knew him,” Reliford said.
In honor of Alonzo, Field Kindley High School held a candlelight vigil on Thursday evening, May 23. The event occurred in the school gymnasium and brought together friends, family, and community members to remember and celebrate his life. Attendees brought flowers and balloons shaped like hearts, the sun, and the letter “A.” Alonzo’s graduation cap and soccer gear were set up on a table as part of the tribute.
