Susan Backlinie, renowned for her unforgettable role in the blockbuster movie “Jaws,” has died. The acclaimed actress and stuntwoman died at her Ventura, California, home on Saturday morning, May 11. Matthew Templeton, Backlinie’s convention agent, and her husband, Harvey Swindall, confirmed her death, stating that she died of a heart attack at her home.

Templeton released a statement expressing the loss felt by those close to Backlinie. “It is with sincere regret to confirm that our beloved Susan passed away this morning,” Templeton said. He also requested privacy for her family during this time and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy.

Backlinie’s journey into the realm of acting began in 1975 with Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” where she portrayed Chrissie Watkins. In the film’s opening sequence, her character decides to go skinny dipping in the ocean, only to have a fatal encounter with a shark. This scene not only became emblematic of the movie but also marked the beginning of Hollywood’s blockbuster era, instilling a sense of caution towards ocean swimming in countless viewers.

The iconic scene required two days to shoot. Reflecting on the experience in an interview last year, Backlinie had remarked on the chilling temperatures of the water, despite her repeated viewings and affection for the film.

Her collaboration with Spielberg continued beyond “Jaws.” Backlinie worked with him again to parody her famous scene in the film “1941,” a movie that, despite its ambition, didn’t achieve the same level of acclaim.

Following her memorable role in “Jaws,” Backlinie pursued a career in stunt work, contributing her talents to a variety of film and television projects. Among her notable credits were “The Great Muppet Caper,” “Day of the Animals,” and the television series “The Fall Guy.” However, it was her role in “Jaws” that cemented her status as a fan favorite, particularly evident on the convention circuit, where she remained a popular figure.

Survived by her husband Harvey, Susan Backlinie leaves behind a legacy punctuated by a scene that not only captured the imaginations of cinema-goers but also marked a pivotal moment in film history.
