Musical “Grease” Actress Dies at 72

Susan Buckner, a Seattle, Washington native and renowned actress, has died at the age of 72. Buckner was most recognized for her role as Patty Simcox, the spirited cheerleader in the 1978 iconic musical “Grease.” The news of her demise was confirmed by Melissa Berthier, a publicist representing the Buckner family, who stated that the actress died peacefully on May 2, surrounded by family. The details surrounding her cause of death were not disclosed.

Expressing her deep bond with her mother, Samantha Mansfield, Buckner’s daughter, described her mother as a source of “magic” and her “best friend” in a statement. She noted that her mother’s passing has left a significant void in the family and among those who cherished Buckner’s dynamic energy.

Born in Seattle in 1952, Buckner’s foray into fame began in 1971 when she claimed the title of Miss Washington and subsequently represented the state in the Miss America pageant in 1972. This early achievement paved the way for her transition into the entertainment industry. She joined The Golddiggers, a well-known all-female singing and dancing group featured on “The Dean Martin Show.”

Her television career expanded with roles in several notable programs, including “The Mac Davis Show,” “Sonny and Cher,” and “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.” However, it was her role in “Grease” that firmly established her presence in American pop culture. Buckner’s portrayal of Patty Simcox captured the essence of high school spirit, resonating with audiences through her character’s palpable zeal.

Buckner continued to act into the 1980s, appearing in TV series like “The Love Boat” and “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” and in films such as “Police Academy 6: City Under Siege.” Nevertheless, “Grease” remained her most notable contribution to the entertainment industry.

Buckner chose to step back from her acting career to focus on raising her two children. She later directed children’s theater at an elementary school in Florida and taught dance at a gym in Coral Gables, sharing her love for the art.

Buckner’s memory lives on through her daughter Samantha Mansfield, son Adam Josephs, grandchildren, and her longtime partner, Al, along with the rest of her large and loving family.
