Popular CNN Political Analyst Dead at 58

Alice Stewart, a distinguished political commentator for CNN and experienced political adviser, has died at the age of 58. She was found dead early Saturday morning, May 18, in the Belle View neighborhood of northern Virginia. Officials suspect she suffered a medical emergency, with no indications of foul play.

Stewart was born on March 11, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia and she began her career as a local journalist and producer in the same state. Subsequently, she relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas to serve as a news anchor. Stewart’s rise in the political sphere began when she became the communications director for the then-governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee. She was instrumental in Huckabee’s 2008 presidential campaign and subsequently held similar positions in Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum’s 2012 presidential runs, as well as Ted Cruz’s 2016 campaign.

Before the 2016 election, Stewart joined CNN as a political commentator, quickly becoming known for her candid commentary and comprehensive knowledge of the Republican political landscape. She was a regular guest on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” with her most recent appearance being on Friday, May 17.

Stewart was warmly remembered by her CNN colleagues. Dana Bash, CNN’s chief political correspondent, who has known Stewart for almost 20 years, characterized her as “someone who told it straight.” Maria Cardona, Stewart’s podcast co-host on “Hot Mics From Left to Right,” expressed her grief, referring to Stewart as a “loving, shining light.”

“Alice was a wonderful and talented commentator,” Bash stated. “Her insights into Republican politics were invaluable, and her presence on our panels will be deeply missed.”

Stewart was noted for her adept handling of the often volatile world of GOP politics. Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson praised Stewart for her belief that “politics was about making friends and not creating enemies.”

In addition to her professional success, Stewart was known for her love of running. She frequently took part in road races across the country and often posted pictures from her races on social media, including events like the TCS New York City Marathon and the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race.

Wolf Blitzer and Jessica Dean, CNN anchors, paid tribute to Stewart, emphasizing her professionalism, expertise, and affable nature. “Alice was an exceptional woman and a valued friend and colleague,” Blitzer said. “Her contributions to our network and the broader political discourse will not be forgotten.”

Apart from her role at CNN, Stewart was part of the senior advisory committee at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School and was a former fellow there. Her commitment to guiding future political leaders was widely acknowledged.

The news of Stewart’s death has greatly affected the political and media communities. Many expressed their condolences and shared their memories of her on social media. “Alice Stewart was a beacon of light in the often murky world of politics,” Cardona posted on X. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.”

Stewart’s contribution to political commentary and her unwavering dedication to her work have left a lasting mark. Her ability to offer accurate, thoughtful analysis in the complex political sphere underscored her expertise and commitment. Her absence will be felt by colleagues, friends, and viewers alike.
