Early Saturday morning, May 25th, 2024, Johnny Wactor, an actor known for his role on “General Hospital,” was fatally shot in downtown Los Angeles, California, while confronting thieves attempting to steal a catalytic converter from his car. The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m. near Pico Boulevard and Hope Street.

According to Wactor’s mother, Scarlett Wactor, he and a coworker had just finished their shift at a downtown rooftop bar and were walking to their cars when they noticed three men tampering with Wactor’s vehicle. Initially believing his car was being towed, Wactor approached the individuals to inquire, but one of the suspects pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Wactor, 37, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, and as of now, no arrests have been made.

His mother spoke to the local media, expressing her devastation over her son’s untimely death. “Johnny was always trying to help others, even in dangerous situations. He didn’t deserve this,” she said. Wactor’s agent, David Shaul, also shared his grief, describing Wactor as a “spectacular human being” and a “moral example to everyone who knew him.”

Johnny Wactor starred as Brando Corbin in nearly 200 “General Hospital” episodes from 2020 to 2022. He also had roles in other television shows such as “Westworld,” “Criminal Minds,” and “Station 19.” His co-star, Sofia Mattsson, who played his love interest on “General Hospital,” expressed her heartbreak, saying, “Johnny was genuine, caring, and incredibly hardworking. He ensured that everyone around him felt acknowledged, listened to, and cared for.”

Catalytic converter thefts have become increasingly common in California, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. These car parts contain precious metals that can be sold for a high price. The rise in thefts has led to new state laws designed to enhance penalties for purchasers who do not verify that a catalytic converter is legally obtained.

Following Wactor’s death, his former colleagues and fans took to social media to share their condolences and memories. “Johnny was genuinely unique and a joy to work with every single day,” said a statement from the General Hospital production team. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this challenging period.”

The investigation into Wactor’s death is ongoing, and the LAPD is urging anyone with information to come forward. Scarlett Wactor hopes her son’s story will raise awareness about the dangers of confronting criminals.
