A day of enjoyment at a local water park took a tragic turn when an 11-year-old boy suffered a fatal medical emergency. Titus Mark Wininger, from Escondido, died after suffering a medical crisis caused by a rare congenital heart defect at Wild Rivers Waterpark in Irvine, California.

The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the popular Irvine attraction. Orange County Fire Authority responded swiftly to the call, initially reported as a non-water-related medical issue outside the pool area. Despite immediate medical intervention, Titus was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the cause of death on Tuesday, identifying it as anomalous insertion of coronary arteries, a rare congenital heart defect. “This condition occurs when an artery is improperly formed before birth,” explained Sgt. Matt Parrish. “It disrupts the normal flow of blood to the heart muscle, which can lead to severe consequences such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden death.”

Titus’s condition is notably rare, affecting about 1% of the population, often without prior symptoms. While treatable through surgery, it remains challenging to detect, particularly in individuals who do not exhibit symptoms.

A GoFundMe page to support the Wininger family stated that Titus was at the water park with a youth group at the time of the incident. The page has garnered over $18,000, reflecting the community’s solidarity.

Reactions from the community and beyond have been heartfelt. Many have reached out to offer their condolences and support to the Wininger family. “It’s an unimaginable loss,” said a family friend on the GoFundMe page. “Titus was a bright, active, and joyful child who brought light to everyone he met.”

Wild Rivers Waterpark expressed its sorrow in a social media post. “Our hearts go out to the boy’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the post read. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

The water park, which reopened in 2022 at a new location in Orange County’s Great Park, remains a beloved destination for families seeking summer fun. Despite the incident, the park continues to operate, offering a wide array of attractions, including 20 slides and a large wave pool.

Titus Wininger will be remembered as a vibrant young boy whose life was cut short unexpectedly. His family and friends are left to mourn a life that was full of potential and joy, now turned into a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.
