A fatal collision claimed the lives of a family of five from Eagle Pass, Texas on the night of May 28, 2024. The tragic incident occurred nine miles east of Eagle Pass on U.S. Highway 57, around 8 p.m.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has reported that the family was traveling westbound in a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV when a 2019 Ford FedEx box truck traveling eastbound crossed into their lane, resulting in a fatal head-on collision. The deceased included the SUV’s driver, 34-year-old Joanna Martinez, and her passengers Samantha Martinez, 25, Noemi Jimenez Martinez, 61, and Jose Martinez, 71. A ten-year-old girl, whose identity remains undisclosed, also succumbed to her injuries while being transported to Fort Duncan Medical Center.
A FedEx spokesperson expressed their deepest condolences to those affected by the accident, stating, “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this accident, and we offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends grieving their loved ones.” They further pledged their full cooperation with the investigation and reiterated safety as their top priority.
The FedEx truck driver sustained injuries in the collision and was subsequently hospitalized. Details regarding the extent of his injuries remain undisclosed.
As the investigation by Texas DPS troopers unfolds, early indications suggest that the FedEx truck strayed from its lane, causing the accident. The investigation is considering potential contributing factors such as driver distraction, impairment, or vehicle malfunction.
A friend of the deceased family described them as closely bonded, stating, “They were always together and supporting each other. It’s hard to believe they’re gone.”
The sudden loss has deeply affected the Eagle Pass community, with residents expressing their grief and shock at the incident and its significant impact on the community.
In response to the tragic event, Texas DPS has emphasized the critical importance of road safety. “Accidents like this highlight the importance of safe driving practices,” commented Texas Highway Patrol Staff Sergeant Rene Cordova. “We must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the road.”
