A five-month-old baby girl in Cidade Ocidental, Goiás, Brazil was mauled to death by a family dog at her grandparents’ house on June 4, 2024. The child, Isis da Silva Sobrinho, was reportedly left alone on a couch for about an hour while her parents shopped for a family barbecue.
According to local reports, Isis was asleep when the attack occurred. Her parents, whose names have not been disclosed, were charged with manslaughter without intent to kill. Both were released after paying approximately $263 in bail.
Isis’ uncle, who was preparing for the barbecue in the backyard, stated he was unaware that the child had been left unattended. He told police he saw the child’s father leave and assumed the mother was still inside the house. When he heard Isis crying, he thought nothing of it, believing she was with her mother. It was only later that he discovered the scene and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The attack left Isis with multiple bite marks and a torn pelvis.
“The dog had never shown any signs of aggression before,” said the child’s grandmother, who remained anonymous. “He was always playful and friendly with everyone.” The mixed-breed dog had been with the family for five years and belonged to the child’s grandparents.
Authorities believe the dog may have been hungry during the attack, as it had not been fed that day. During their investigation, police found no dog food in the house. The local Civil Police, a state-level investigative police department responsible for conducting criminal investigations, are leading an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Isis’ parents had left her in the care of her uncle while they went shopping. However, the grandparents were also out at the time. The family dog managed to escape through a hole in the fence and attacked the infant.
Neighbors expressed their shock over the incident. “The family is well-known and liked in the community. We can’t imagine what they are going through,” said a neighbor who wished to remain unnamed.
The case has sparked discussions about pet owners’ responsibilities and the safety measures needed when children are around animals. This incident underscores the importance of ensuring that pets are well-fed and securely confined, especially in households with young children.
