In a recent interview, Wendell Pierce, Meghan Markle’s former co-star on the hit TV series “Suits,” shared touching insights into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship. Pierce, who played Robert Zane, the father of Markle’s character Rachel Zane, spoke fondly of their bond and recounted his recent reunion with the royal couple.
“When Meghan visited the city last year to receive an award, I had the opportunity to greet her, Prince Harry, and their children,” Pierce shared. “They appeared very much in love and were genuinely happy, which is the most important thing.”
Pierce and Markle shared a close bond during their time on “Suits,” which aired from 2011 to 2019. Markle left the show after season 7, following her engagement to Prince Harry in 2017. Despite the change in her life’s trajectory, Pierce maintains that their friendship has endured. “Working with Meghan was a blast,” Pierce said. “I’ve only seen her a handful of times since then, but we’ve been able to catch up and reminisce, and our memories of working together are genuinely cherished.”
Pierce recalled a memorable moment from Markle’s final day on the “Suits” set. The Tony Award winner recounted his parting words to Markle during an appearance on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” earlier this year. “On her last night of filming, I told her, ‘Meghan, your life is about to change dramatically, and you will be in a bubble. But remember, no matter what, I’m your friend — you have many friends.’ I reminded her, ‘We’re always thinking about you and will always be there for you. Wherever you are, you have a friend in me.'”
The actor praised Markle as both a person and an actress. “She’s the nicest person ever,” Pierce gushed. He also hinted that Markle might be interested in acting again, though she officially retired from the profession upon joining the royal family in 2018.
In 2020, after stepping down as senior members of the British Royal Family, Meghan and Prince Harry moved to Montecito, California. Since then, the couple has focused on various philanthropic endeavors and media projects. Markle has recently launched a new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, which includes a line of home goods and a cooking show as part of the couple’s multi-million dollar deal with Netflix.
As “Suits” enjoys a resurgence in popularity on Netflix, Pierce also shared his astonishment at the show’s newfound popularity. “It surprised me,” he mentioned to People.com. “We wrapped up the series nearly eight years ago, so seeing this resurgence is remarkable.”
The actor also teased the possibility of returning to the “Suits” universe with the upcoming spinoff, “Suits: LA,” led by Stephen Amell. “And so now there’s going to be a new generation of folks to take it over, and I’m sure that some of us will make some cameos, but it’s really great to have a resurgence,” he said.
Pierce defended Markle from critics regarding her absence at the 2024 Golden Globes, emphasizing that she has a family to focus on. He noted that despite public scrutiny, Meghan and Prince Harry’s love and happiness remain evident.
