In a recent interview, actor Kevin Costner shared a previously untold story about his plans to cast Princess Diana in a sequel to his 1992 hit film “The Bodyguard.” The project, facilitated by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, never came to fruition due to Diana’s untimely death.
Costner discussed this potential collaboration during an episode of PeopleTV’s “Couch Surfing.” He revealed that the idea emerged around the mid-1990s, and Sarah Ferguson played a crucial role. “Sarah was really important,” Costner noted. “She set up the conversation between me and Diana and supported the idea.”
The sequel was to follow Costner’s character, Frank Farmer, protecting Diana’s character from paparazzi and stalkers, leading to a romantic relationship. Diana was intrigued and even asked about a kissing scene with a mix of nervousness and curiosity. Costner recalled, “She was very respectful and a little nervous because her life was governed. Despite her nervousness, Diana was ready to take on the challenge of acting in a Hollywood movie.”
The project was halted abruptly after Diana’s car accident in August 1997 at age 36, just a day after Costner received the screenplay for the sequel. Years later, Costner privately met with Diana’s son, Prince William. During this conversation, Prince William revealed a personal sentiment. “The first thing he said was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you,'” Costner recounted. He was both surprised and touched, replying modestly, “I know.”
Costner expressed deep respect for Prince William, describing their interaction as sweet. “We talked for about half an hour,” Costner said. “I’ll never say what we talked about, but it was a lovely thing.”
Reflecting on the project that never was, Costner mentioned how close it had come to reality and how much he admired both Princess Diana and the support from Sarah Ferguson.
Despite the film never being made, Costner’s story offers a glimpse into what could have been a fascinating crossover between Hollywood and royalty.
