The bodies of Cynthia “Cindy” Roberson Gobble, 60, and Gregory Wayne Gobble, 59, were found in a wooded area in Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple, who were reported missing, were discovered on Friday morning, May 31, 2024, ending a search initiated by an Ashanti Alert issued for Cynthia.

The investigation began Thursday evening when family members requested a welfare check on Cynthia at her Mocksville, North Carolina home. Deputies from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office found the home empty, with her purse, wallet, and insulin left behind, suggesting she had not left voluntarily.

Authorities immediately suspected foul play, particularly given Cynthia’s ongoing separation and divorce from Gregory. The couple’s family reported that they had been unable to contact either since late Wednesday afternoon. The search for the Gobbles intensified, with deputies scouring familiar locations. Gregory was soon labeled a person of interest, and the search focused on his white Ford truck.

On Friday, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a call about two bodies found near Sheffield Road, just over the Iredell-Davie County line. The bodies were identified as Cynthia and Gregory, both with gunshot wounds, and the murder weapon was found nearby.

Evidence at the scene indicated that Gregory shot Cynthia before taking his own life. “It’s a tragic end to a very concerning case,” stated Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this incident.”

Cynthia had recently filed for legal separation, citing cyberstalking and the placement of a tracking device on her car by Gregory. Court documents also mentioned Gregory’s volatile behavior, attempts to isolate Cynthia from her family, and his refusal to work or contribute to living expenses after their marriage in 2012 and after moving into the home she shared with her now-deceased ex-husband. The court granted her exclusive ownership of their shared home. Her sudden disappearance and the subsequent discovery of the bodies have left the community in shock.

Cynthia’s son shared his grief on social media, expressing disbelief and pain at the loss of his mother, describing the situation as a nightmare. “I’m trying to process what happened, but it all seems like a nightmare until I realize I’ll never be able to tell my Mom I love her again,” he wrote.

Authorities have closed the case, stating there is no ongoing threat to the public and no other suspects involved. They are, however, seeking additional information regarding the couple’s activities between Wednesday and Thursday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Davie County Sheriff’s Office.
