Authorities in Utah have confirmed the death of Cynthia Ann Grimwood, a 19-year-old woman from Springville, Utah, who went missing while hiking with her dog near Horsetail Falls in Alpine, Utah. Grimwood’s body was discovered after an extensive search that began on Friday, June 7, 2024 when hikers found her dog and personal belongings, including a cellphone video showing her entering the water.

Sgt. Garrett Dutson of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office provided an update stating that Grimwood’s body was found Friday night but was not recovered until the following morning due to safety concerns. Dutson explained, “[The] water is super high and moving super-fast,” highlighting the dangerous conditions that likely contributed to her accident.

The search began when two hikers discovered a small dog, a cell phone, and other suspicious personal items. Upon reviewing the video on the phone, it became evident that Grimwood had been swept away by the river’s strong currents. Responders, including a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter and multiple search and rescue teams, located Grimwood’s body under some trees in the water approximately 100 yards below Horsetail Falls.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office mentioned that they initially considered all possible scenarios regarding Grimwood’s disappearance. However, after her body was recovered, it became clear that she likely underestimated the speed and strength of the water she encountered. “We are investigating what might have happened to that young woman. Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation,” said Cannon.

The area around Horsetail Falls was described as hazardous, with steep rock walls and treacherous conditions due to heavy snowmelt runoff. This made the recovery efforts particularly challenging, necessitating an overnight stay for the search and rescue teams to ensure the safe retrieval of Grimwood’s body the following day.

Authorities have ruled out foul play in Grimwood’s death, calling it a tragic accident. Sgt. Dutson extended condolences to Grimwood’s family, emphasizing the community’s shared grief over this heartbreaking loss. Her dog has been safely returned to her family, providing a small measure of comfort amidst their sorrow.
