Teen Track Star Killed in Car Wreck

On June 7, 2024, 18-year-old track star and recent high school graduate, Kenna Wilson, was killed in a car accident on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. when a 2015 Lexus sedan, driven by a 23-year-old male from Boca Raton, Florida, rear-ended Wilson’s 2008 Honda Accord. The Honda was operated by a 17-year-old male, with Wilson as a passenger.

Prior to the accident, Wilson had left the Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital in an attempt to visit a friend in the emergency room. The collision forced both cars off the roadway and into trees. Emergency services transported the injured to local hospitals, but Wilson was pronounced dead at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital at 3:27 a.m.

Wilson was a well-respected member of her community and a notable athlete at Martin County High School in Florida. She was part of her school’s relay team that set a new record in their last meet of the season.

Her coach, Chris Thompson, recalled her as a “very fiery competitor,” highlighting her tenacity and team spirit. “The team worked together every day all season, doing workouts together, working on their relay handoff, just trying to put together that perfect race,” stated Thompson.

Her former school expressed their sorrow over her loss in a heartfelt Facebook post, urging the community to “hold tight to the loving memories” they had of her. The post depicted Wilson as a beloved part of the school community who will be greatly missed.

Following her tragic death, a GoFundMe campaign was started to help cover Wilson’s medical and funeral costs and to aid her family during this difficult time. The campaign highlighted her plans to attend Indian River State College in the fall and her vibrant personality that brought happiness to those around her. The fundraiser has raised over $25,000.

Friends, family, and community members are deeply affected by Wilson’s death. Her stepmother, Lorena Wilson, spoke of Kenna’s kindness and determination, qualities that earned her admiration both on and off the track. A tribute described her as a person who “lit up every room she entered,” capturing her vibrant and kind nature.
