Pat Sajak, the iconic host of “Wheel of Fortune” for over four decades, is stepping into a new chapter in his career following his retirement from the beloved game show. Announced during his final episode, Sajak is set to star in a stage adaptation of the classic mystery thriller, “Prescription: Murder,” at the Hawaii Theatre Center in Honolulu. The play will run from July 31 to August 10, 2025, showcasing Sajak’s dramatic talents on a different stage.
The production of “Prescription: Murder,” originally penned by William Link and Richard Levinson in 1962, was the pilot for the iconic TV series “Columbo.” In this theatrical rendition, Sajak will portray Dr. Ray Flemming, a brilliant but sinister psychiatrist. His long-time friend, Joe Moore, a well-known newscaster in Hawaii, will co-star as Lieutenant Columbo, the clever detective famous for his seemingly bumbling demeanor but sharp investigative skills. This marks the ninth collaboration between Sajak and Moore, who first met while serving at the American Forces Vietnam Network in the late 1960s.
The play also features a talented supporting cast, including Bryce Moore, Therese Olival, Amy K. Sullivan, and Aiko Chinen. Directed by multi-Po’okela Award winner Rob Duval, it aims to be a highlight of the summer theater season in Honolulu. All net proceeds benefit the non-profit Hawaii Theatre Center.
Sajak’s move to the stage follows a remarkable career on “Wheel of Fortune,” where he captivated audiences for 41 seasons. His departure was announced in June 2023, with Ryan Seacrest set to take over hosting duties in September 2024 alongside co-host Vanna White. Reflecting on his decision to retire, Sajak expressed his contentment with leaving the show while still at the top of his game, preferring to bow out “a couple of years too early rather than a couple of years too late.”
Fans and colleagues alike have praised Sajak’s contributions to television, with many excited to see him take on new challenges in the theater. “Pat has delighted audiences nationwide for four decades,” said Suzanne Prete, EVP of Game Shows at Sony Pictures Television. “We are immensely thankful and proud of Pat’s tenure as our host and eagerly anticipate celebrating his remarkable career in the upcoming season.”
As Sajak embarks on this new venture, he remains connected to the “Wheel of Fortune” family, continuing as a consultant for the show for the next three years. Meanwhile, his daughter, Maggie Sajak, continues managing the show’s social media presence, keeping the Sajak legacy alive within the franchise.
