In Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, a former couple, both esteemed teachers, were fatally shot on July 13, 2024, leaving behind two young sons.
Patrick Montgomery and Andrieana Montgomery, both 42, were found with gunshot wounds in separate homes on the same street. Despite their separation, they lived close by to co-parent their children, Connor, 12, and Owen, 10.
Durham Regional Police were called to the scene, and Patrick Montgomery was found first. He was critically injured and died en route to the hospital. Shortly after, officers received information that led them to Andrieana Montgomery in another home on the same street, already deceased from gunshot wounds.
Mark Gordon, a 30-year-old neighbor, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Police confirmed that the suspect knew both of the victims and that the motive remains under investigation. Gordon rented the basement apartment in a house with his partner and child, while Andrieana and her children lived upstairs.
Patrick and Andrieana were well-loved members of their community, professionally and personally. Patrick, a former left-winger for the Oshawa Generals hockey team, worked at the Durham Catholic District School Board. Andrieana was an art teacher at Bowmanville High School, where she inspired many students with her passion for the arts.
In a GoFundMe campaign created to support their sons, organizer Mike Modeste described Patrick as “an active and loving man who could light up a room.” He added, “He took great joy in being a father, playing sports with his sons, coaching them, and building them a backyard ice rink.” The fundraiser also highlighted Andrieana’s dedication to her children and students, stating, “Motherhood came to her naturally and was a responsibility that she took on with the utmost care, love, and grace.”
The campaign has raised over $235,000 to help cover funeral expenses and support the children’s future. The page has become a testament to Patrick and Andrieana’s impact on those around them, filled with messages of love and remembrance.
The Oshawa Generals expressed their condolences in a statement on “X,” saying, “It is with a saddened heart that the Generals organization express condolences for the passing of former left-winger Pat Montgomery and Andrieana Montgomery. We send our prayers for healing to all those affected.”
Neighbors and friends are struggling to come to terms with the loss. Adam Karam-Benton, who lives on the street, recounted the moments after the shooting, saying he saw Gordon sitting on the curb with his hands up, admitting to the crime. “It was shocking and surreal,” Karam-Benton shared. “I never expected something like this to happen in our neighborhood.”
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the Montgomery children and honoring the legacy of their parents. The loss of Patrick and Andrieana Montgomery has left an indelible mark on their community, one that will be felt for years to come.
