A heartbreaking event unfolded in Douglas, Georgia on July 3, 2024, when a two-year-old boy, Nakyzi Odums, accidentally shot himself inside a car in a Walmart parking lot. His parents were nearby at a fireworks stand when the incident occurred.

Witnesses indicated that the boy’s parents, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, had temporarily left their vehicle to purchase fireworks when they heard a sudden noise resembling a gunshot. Upon rushing back to their vehicle, they discovered their son suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite immediate medical intervention and being transported to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida, Nakyzi succumbed to his injuries three days later, on July 6, 2024.

The Douglas Police Department confirmed the devastating death of the toddler in a public statement: “The toddler who accidentally shot himself on July 3, 2024 tragically died this afternoon, July 6, 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family during this challenging period.”

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette emphasized the crucial role of firearm safety, particularly when children are involved. “You’re allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there’s a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn’t have access to it,” Pruette stated. The investigation into how the toddler managed to access the gun is ongoing.

According to witnesses, Nakyzi was sitting in the front seat when the shooting happened, leading to speculation that the gun may have been stored in the door side pocket within the toddler’s reach. The police are investigating the parents for possible negligence or oversight. Whether charges will be filed against them in connection with the incident is yet to be determined.

The event has left the community in shock and sadness, with many expressing their support for the family. Nakyzi was described as a child who “smiled brightly, laughed wholeheartedly, and loved unconditionally.” Nakyzi’s grandmother, in her appeal for donations on a GoFundMe page set up to assist with funeral expenses, wrote, “As one of his grandmothers, I am stepping in and requesting support of burial for our sweet baby. Donations will also allow his mom and dad time to grieve properly. Please donate anything you desire if it’s in your heart and will.” The page has so far generated over $3,000 to help the family financially during this difficult time.
