A young couple from San Jose, California, Pedro David Guadarrama Ceron, 30, and his pregnant fiancée, Emma Nelly Diazleal Lopez, 33, drowned on July 16, 2024, after being swept off the rocks by a powerful wave while taking photos near West Cliff Drive. The area is known as the “death rocks” due to its hazardous currents.
The couple had been posing for pictures on the rocks when a sneaker wave engulfed them. Eyewitnesses immediately called 911, and first responders arrived to find Ceron and Lopez floating face down in the water. Despite the rapid response and rescue efforts, both were pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the ocean.
According to the Santa Cruz Fire Department, the incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Despite continuous efforts to resuscitate them, both victims could not be saved, as stated by Fire Chief Rob Oatey. He emphasized the dangerous nature of the location, pointing out that the varying heights of the rocks and the unpredictable waves make it extremely perilous. The surface is unstable and constantly changing, and if someone falls into the water, they face strong currents and numerous obstacles like coves, caves, and rocks, which can lead to entrapment or being knocked unconscious.
The couple had accessed the rocks by walking down a cliff, an area marked by warning signs advising against entry. The Santa Cruz Fire Department reiterated respecting the ocean and adhering to safety guidelines. “Never turn your back on the ocean and be aware of tidal conditions,” the department warned in a public statement. They stressed that certain southerly swells and rising tides could produce sneaker waves that catch beachgoers off guard, often with deadly consequences.
The couple’s family told media that they were engaged and had just recently found out they were expecting a baby.
This incident highlights the need for caution along the coast. Chief Oatey emphasized the importance of safety equipment and urged the public to respect and preserve lifesaving tools. He also noted that the rescue box near the site was found to be empty, which could hinder emergency efforts.
The Santa Cruz coast is known for its scenic beauty, attracting many tourists and locals. However, it is also notorious for its perilous conditions, particularly around the “death rocks.” Over the years, this area has claimed numerous lives, prompting continuous warnings from authorities. The combination of slippery rocks and sudden waves can turn a picturesque outing into a dangerous encounter in moments.
