Former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Reyes Moronta has died at the age of 31 following a motorcycle accident. The incident occurred outside his father’s home on July 28, 2024, in the Villa Gonzalez community near Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Reyes Moronta, known for his high-velocity fastball and slider, played for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Los Angeles Angels over six seasons.
Moronta’s MLB career began when he signed with the Giants as an international free agent in 2010. He made his MLB debut on September 5, 2017. In 2018, he had a breakout season, appearing in 69 games and posting a 2.49 ERA. “His warm spirit will be missed by all, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time,” the Giants posted on “X.”
Moronta underwent surgery after a shoulder injury in 2019 and missed the entire 2020 season. Despite his efforts to return to peak form, he spent the following years moving between teams, including the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Angels. In 2022, he posted a 4.30 ERA over 39 relief appearances with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.
In 2023, Moronta signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers but was released during spring training. He then played briefly for the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League before signing with the Angels organization. His time with the Angels was short-lived, as he was designated for assignment and sent to the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees.
“We profoundly regret the unexpected death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday,” the Aguilas Cibaenas, Moronta’s most recent team, posted on their social media accounts.
The Mexican Baseball League paid tribute to Moronta, expressing solidarity with his family, friends, and former colleagues in their grief. The baseball operations department and players extended their condolences and prayed for Moronta’s eternal rest.
Reyes Moronta’s career, marked by his powerful pitches and dedication to the sport, will be remembered by fans and colleagues. His journey from a young international free agent signing with the Giants to becoming a key player in MLB and Mexican League teams is a testament to his talent and determination.
