A shooting at Onelife Fitness in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia on June 29, 2024, resulted in the deaths of two men. Alexandria police confirmed that the incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the Hooff’s Run Drive gym. The victims were identified as Joshua Wilcox, 29, of Maryland, and Charles Hewitt, 30, of Washington, D.C.
Witnesses reported that the shooting took place inside the gym, causing chaos among the approximately 50-60 people present. According to local police, Charles Hewitt entered the gym and targeted Joshua Wilcox. After shooting Wilcox, Hewitt turned the gun on himself. Both men were transported to local hospitals but died from their injuries.
Alexandria police quickly responded to the scene. They noted that both the victim and the suspect were known to each other, describing the incident as a targeted attack. “We live in a day and time now where we have to be vigilant – not just law enforcement but homeowners, people who are just trying to go to 7-Eleven, going to the gym,” said Alexandria Office of Communications Director Ebony Fleming.
The incident has deeply affected the gym community and the broader Alexandria area. Onelife Fitness has temporarily closed its Alexandria location, urging members to use other branches. A note left at the gym’s entrance apologized for the inconvenience caused by the closure.
Residents and gym-goers expressed shock and disbelief. One witness described the scene as “chaotic,” with people running in all directions after hearing the gunshots.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Alexandria police are asking anyone with information to come forward. The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the official causes of death for both men.
