A devastating car crash on Long Island claimed the lives of two teenagers and injured three others in the early hours of August 1, 2024. The accident occurred on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, New York, involving a 2010 Toyota Prius that overturned, leaving a scene of destruction and sorrow.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near exit 43A on the eastbound Southern State Parkway. Police responding to a 911 call found the overturned Prius resting on the shoulder in a wooded area. According to law enforcement officials, the vehicle was driven by 18-year-old Oliver Charles from Deer Park, with 17-year-old Dymond Saunders from West Babylon as a passenger. Both teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, leaving family and friends mourning their sudden loss.
Three other passengers in the Prius, whose identities have not been disclosed, were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the New York State Police, who have requested that any witnesses or individuals with information come forward to aid in the investigation.
Neighbor Ty Bridges, who saw Saunders entering the Prius on the night of the accident, expressed his shock and sadness. He noted that Saunders was a friendly teenager full of enthusiasm for life and pointed out her red Buick, which she proudly considered her own.
Young drivers on Long Island face significant dangers due to risky driving behaviors and challenging road conditions. In 2023, Long Island experienced its deadliest year for young drivers aged 16 to 20, with 32 fatal crashes, surpassing the previous high of 29 in 2015. Factors such as pandemic-related changes in driver’s education, which allowed for limited in-car instruction, and a surge in speeding have contributed to this alarming trend. The unique road conditions on Long Island, including winding and tree-lined roads designed for slower speeds, further exacerbate the risks for inexperienced drivers.
The community has come together to support the victims’ families, with local churches and organizations offering counseling and assistance. A vigil is planned for Charles and Saunders, where friends, family, and community members gather to honor their lives and share memories.
