A local elementary school principal was murdered in Rome, New York, and her boyfriend, found naked and running through the city streets, has been arrested in connection to her death.

Jeremy J. Kirch, 45, was charged with second-degree murder in relation to the death of Elizabeth A. Gerling, 50, the principal of Columbus Elementary School in Utica, New York. Gerling was found strangled in her bed on the morning of August 20, 2024. She was the daughter of Stephen Gerling, a retired U.S. bankruptcy judge.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kirch was at Gerling’s residence the evening before her death. The couple was dating, and during questioning, Kirch made a confession that led to his arrest.

The sudden death of Gerling has greatly impacted the local school district right before the new academic year started. Dr. Christopher Spence, the superintendent of Utica City School District, praised her as an exceptional educator and leader, adding that her loss was a significant blow to both the community and her students.

Before the discovery of Gerling’s body, Kirch had been noticed acting strangely. He showed up at a stranger’s house, asserting that God had guided him there. Despite authorities advising Gerling to be careful, she was found dead in her home the following day.

A few hours after the murder, Kirch was encountered strolling naked through the streets of Rome, leading to his arrest. He underwent evaluation at a hospital before his arraignment in Rome City Court. Kirch is currently held at the Oneida County Jail without bail.

The school community, friends, and family of Gerling mourn the loss of a dedicated educator. Gerling’s son Noah, 20, spoke about all the love he received from her, “I can’t even put it into words,” he said. “She was the most amazing mother.” He added that “his mom wore a funny costume to work once a week, maybe a blow-up unicorn or, over the holidays, a gingerbread woman, he said. “The kids just absolutely adored her,” he said, “even the naughty kids.”  A vigil in her honor was held on August 26 as the Utica community grapples with her passing. Her 50th birthday had been celebrated only a few weeks ago.

Kirch is scheduled for his next court appearance on November 6, where his defense has requested a psychiatric evaluation. The court will take into account his mental condition at the time of the crime.

As the school year begins, grief counselors from the Oneida County Department of Mental Health are on hand to provide support for students and faculty affected by Gerling’s passing.
