In the quiet town of Beaumaris, North Wales, UK, a tragic car crash on the seafront has left three people dead, shaking the close-knit community and its visitors.
On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, a gray Audi A8 reportedly lost control, resulting in a catastrophic accident on Alma Street, a bustling area near Beaumaris Pier, where locals and tourists frequently gather.
The incident, which occurred shortly after 2:45 p.m., involved the male driver of the Audi, a local resident who was in his 80s. His car plowed into two pedestrians, a man and a woman, both in their 60s. North Wales Police confirmed that all three were pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency responders.
According to witnesses, the car swerved to avoid a horse and carriage before mounting the pavement, striking the pedestrians, and then crashing into a house.
A resident, who was staying in a nearby hotel overlooking the scene, recalled the horrifying moments following the collision. “It was just awful, the ambulance took ages to get here and when the police and the vehicles eventually came… there was nothing they could do once they got here,” she said.
Another witness, who was present on the seafront at the time, described the crash as happening “completely out of the blue.” She said, “It’s an utter tragedy for those directly affected by the crash.”
One local said: ‘It swerved to go around a horse and carriage, mounted the pavement, and hit pedestrians who were walking past a house – they didn’t stand a chance.”
The town of Beaumaris, located on the Isle of Anglesey, was bustling with people enjoying the seaside atmosphere when the accident occurred. The community, known for its picturesque views and serene environment, was suddenly thrust into chaos as people tried to comprehend the magnitude of the tragedy. Local businesses and residents rallied to provide support, with some offering refuge to those directly affected.
A police spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that the victims included the elderly driver, who was local to North Wales, and the two pedestrians, who were visiting from outside the area. The spokesperson stated, “Members of the public and the emergency services responded, however, despite the best efforts of all involved, the male driver of the Audi, and the male and female pedestrians, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with North Wales Police appealing for any witnesses, particularly those with dash cam or front door camera footage, to come forward. Sergeant Emlyn Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit emphasized the importance of witness testimonies in understanding the full circumstances of the incident.
As the investigation continues, the community of Beaumaris remains united in its grief, offering support to the families of the victims and each other.
