In Canton, Michigan, a quiet Saturday morning turned deadly after a heated argument between neighbors ended in a fatal shooting. The tragic incident has left a community grieving and searching for answers, as details continue to emerge about the senseless loss of life.
On August 10, 2024, 47-year-old Devereaux Christopher Johnson allegedly shot and killed his neighbor, 35-year-old Nathan Morris, following a confrontation in the middle of a suburban street. According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the dispute began when Morris, accompanied by his wife and two young daughters, walked past Johnson’s property. The conflict reportedly ignited when Morris’ daughter touched a pile of mulch in Johnson’s yard, sparking an argument between the two men.
Authorities stated that Johnson, who has a history of assaulting neighbors and police officers, initiated the argument. Despite Morris’ attempts to de-escalate the situation, Johnson allegedly retrieved a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the unarmed Morris.
Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh described the event as a “senseless act of violence toward the victim.”
When police arrived at the scene, they found Morris lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Marcus Carlson, lead pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church, where Morris was an active member, spoke to local reporters about the deep loss felt by those who knew him. “[He was] very driven by his family, really loved his family, loved his kids, and so I think even so much of that faith experience was centered around what was best for his kids,” Carlson said.
The impact of Morris’ death has rippled through the Canton community. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have rallied around his widow and daughters, ages five and two, setting up a fundraiser to help support the family during this difficult time. The online campaign has already raised over $38,000, a testament to the outpouring of support from the community.
Morris’ friend, Edward McCall, who organized the fundraiser, expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the incident. “It’s monstrous,” he said. “The triviality of it is completely shocking.”
