A tragic incident took place in New Albany, Indiana on August 10, 2024, when Kaitlynn Lee, a 25-year-old mother, was shot and killed while recording a TikTok video in an apartment with a friend. Her ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Joshua Thompson, is facing criminal charges for her murder.
Police reports indicate that the incident happened approximately at 5 a.m. in a Village Drive apartment. Lee was in the kitchen making a TikTok video when Thompson reportedly showed up at the window. Witnesses testified to hearing Thompson banging on the window before Lee questioned, “What are you doing here?” Thompson then fired two to three shots, one of which hit Lee in the head. The chilling footage captured on TikTok shows Lee falling out of the camera’s view as smoke fills the room.
Lee had previously secured a no-contact order against Thompson following a domestic violence incident in April 2024. She had been moving from place to place to stay out of his reach, and at the time of the shooting was staying with a friend. However, Thompson managed to find her location and carry out the fatal shooting. A witness shared that the relationship between Lee and Thompson had been fraught with issues, with Lee voicing concerns for her safety. She had once told a friend that if anything were to happen to her, Thompson would be responsible.
Thompson, who is the father of Lee’s one-year-old son, confessed to his actions during his arrest. Following the shooting, he called his brother in a state of panic and admitted to the crime. He then dialed 911 and turned himself in to the authorities. Thompson is facing charges of murder, invasion of privacy, criminal recklessness, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He remains in custody without bond, with a trial scheduled for March 24.
Lee, a mother of three, leaves behind a family devastated by her sudden and tragic death. Her cousin shared that Lee’s children were her world, and she would have done anything for them. To help with funeral costs and provide for her children, the same cousin has set up a GoFundMe campaign, which has so far raised over $8,000.
In light of this case, organizations combating domestic violence are emphasizing the crucial need for resources and support for those trapped in abusive situations. The Center for Women and Families offers around-the-clock anonymous hotlines and emergency shelters for individuals seeking help.
