Olympic Cyclist Found Dead in Apartment

Five-time Olympic cyclist Daniela Larreal Chirinos, known for her remarkable contributions to Venezuelan cycling, was found dead in her Las Vegas, Nevada apartment on August 16, 2024, after she reportedly choked on her food.

Chirinos, 50, had built a decorated career in the sport, representing Venezuela in five Olympic Games between 1992 and 2012. After her retirement, she moved to Las Vegas, where she worked as a waitress at a local hotel.

Larreal Chirinos was last seen on August 11, 2024, and her failure to show up for work the following day raised alarms. Concerned colleagues reported her absence to authorities, leading to the discovery of her body five days later. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, in collaboration with the Clark County Coroner’s Office, determined that she had died of asphyxiation due to choking on food.

According to the preliminary autopsy report, “solid food remains were found in her trachea,” a statement confirmed by authorities to various news outlets. The exact cause and manner of her death are still under investigation, but initial findings point to an accidental choking incident as the likely cause.

Larreal Chirinos’ career was a testament to her dedication and talent. She participated in five Olympic Games, making her one of Venezuela’s most accomplished athletes. During her time on the world stage, her best Olympic finish came in 2012, when she placed seventh in the team sprint finals in London. Beyond the Olympics, Larreal Chirinos also earned numerous medals in other international competitions. She won two gold medals at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships, solidifying her place as a leading figure in track cycling.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee expressed their condolences, highlighting the impact Larreal Chirinos had on the sport and the nation. In a statement, they noted, “Her great career and multiple triumphs always filled us with great pride.” Her passing has left a significant void in the hearts of many in Venezuela and the broader cycling community.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Larreal Chirinos was also known for her outspoken political views. She had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States after criticizing the regime of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Her criticisms led to death threats, prompting her to flee Venezuela and seek refuge in the U.S. Despite the challenges she faced, she remained a prominent voice in both the sporting and political spheres.

As investigations continue, her friends, family, and former teammates mourn the loss of a woman who was not only a champion on the track but also a fighter in life. The outpouring of grief from the cycling community reflects the deep respect and admiration she garnered over her decades-long career.

Henrique Capriles, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure, also shared his sorrow, describing Larreal Chirinos as “a symbol of perseverance, dedication, and passion.”
