Popular Tanzanian singer Joseph Francis, known as Mandojo, died on August 11, 2024, after being beaten by a security guard who mistakenly identified him as a thief. The incident occurred at the All Saints Parish Catholic Church in Nzuguni, a neighborhood in Tanzania’s capital city, Dodoma.

Raphael Keneth Ndamanhwa, a security guard at the church, has been arrested in connection with the killing. Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Anania Amo, the Acting Commander of the Dodoma Regional Police, confirmed that Ndamanhwa is the primary suspect. The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mandojo’s death.

Mandojo, 45, a prominent figure in the bongo flava music genre, was well-known for his collaborations with fellow artist Domokaya. Some of his popular songs include “Wanok Nok,” “Dingi,” and “Nikupe Nini.” His music, which blends traditional Tanzanian sounds with global influences, resonated with fans across the region.

According to reports, Mandojo was found hiding in a dog kennel on the church premises, which led Ndamanhwa to mistake him for a thief. The guard, along with other individuals attending a service at the church, restrained and beat Mandojo. He died from his injuries while receiving treatment at Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves through the Tanzanian music community. Musicians have turned to social media to express their grief and honor the memory of the late artist. Domokaya, who worked closely with him, shared his sadness on Instagram, noting that it was hard to believe, especially with his birthday approaching on the 22nd of this month. He lamented the situation and wished his friend eternal peace and light.

Anselm Tryphone, a musician also known as Soggy Doggy, conveyed his profound grief, stating that his heart was heavy with pain and that he would miss his friend and brother, Mandojo, greatly. He wished him peace and reflected on the brevity of life. He extended his condolences to family and friends and expressed his deep sorrow, acknowledging that everything happens according to God’s plan.

Mandojo’s death occurred just days before what would have been his 46th birthday, further compounding the sorrow felt by those who knew him. The ongoing investigation by the Dodoma Regional Police is being closely followed as fans and fellow artists hope for justice in the case.

Mandojo’s contributions to the Tanzanian music scene will not be forgotten, and his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to bring joy to listeners.
