Hailey Merkt, a participant in the 21st season of “The Bachelor,” died on Friday, July 26, 2024, at age 31 following her fight against leukemia. The news was announced on her Instagram account by her family and friends on July 30.

According to the Instagram post, Merkt fought her illness with considerable strength, grace, and selflessness. She exceeded medical expectations with her determination and courage. It was her choice to spend her final moments engaging in her favorite activities, surrounded by her loved ones.

Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Merkt was known for her vivacious personality. She appeared on “The Bachelor” during Nick Viall’s season in 2017. Despite being eliminated in the second week, she left a memorable mark on both the audience and her fellow contestants.

In April 2024, Merkt publicly announced on Instagram that she was free of leukemia following an experimental treatment and a bone marrow transplant. Regrettably, a mere six weeks later, she discovered that her leukemia had returned with a vengeance. Regardless of the bleak prognosis, Merkt continued to live her life fully, cherishing moments with her loved ones.

Several Bachelor contestants from her season have expressed their sorrow and shared touching tributes. Danielle Maltby, who also competed in the same season, shared her appreciation for having known Merkt. She described Merkt as genuine, warm, and beautiful. Similarly, Raven Gates, the season’s runner-up, expressed her deep sadness and disappointment, affirming that Merkt would always be remembered.

Merkt’s GoFundMe page, initially set up to cover her medical expenses, confirmed her passing and announced that it would stay open until August 10. The campaign has raised over $118,000, indicating the widespread support for Merkt. Her family expressed their gratitude for the financial assistance, which eased the cost of medical and living expenses during her treatment.

Merkt is survived by her mother Michele, sister Jenny, brother Kyle, and partner Henry, who provided unwavering support throughout her battle. Specifically, her mother Michele was recognized for her tireless efforts in caring for Merkt.

In line with Merkt’s wishes, no formal funeral will be held. Instead, her family and friends encourage those wishing to pay tribute to share their stories and memories on her Instagram account.
