Emily Gold, a 17-year-old contestant from the current season of “America’s Got Talent ” (AGT), died by suicide just weeks after her appearance on the popular NBC show. Gold, a member of the Los Osos High School dance team in Rancho Cucamonga, California, was found dead on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 11:52 pm.

The San Bernardino Coroner’s Office confirmed to the media that Gold’s death has been classified as a suicide. California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Rodrigo Jimenez offered details of the incident, explaining that officers from the Rancho Cucamonga area responded to reports of a pedestrian on the roadway. Upon arrival, they found a 17-year-old female who had been struck by at least one vehicle in the carpool lane of eastbound 210, underneath an overpass where it is suspected that she jumped from. She was pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries.

Gold and her dance troupe from Los Osos High School had impressed audiences and judges alike during their AGT journey. The group successfully made it through the auditions and reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated in August. Despite their elimination, the team’s high-energy performance earned them a standing ovation from judge Simon Cowell.

Cowell praised the group’s performance: “It was absolutely brilliant. What I loved about this was first of all the energy. I think what I just saw is everything a great school should be doing, which is encouraging talent and friendship.” He added, “It reminded me of seeing the High School Musical movie and thinking every kid should go to a school like that.”

In an August 13 interview, Gold discussed her approach to performing, explaining that her primary focus on stage is incorporating last-minute adjustments, often given up until five minutes before showtime. She mentioned that applying these corrections is her top priority during performances. When asked about juggling her high school responsibilities with her appearances on AGT, she admitted that it can be challenging, but they manage to make it work.

Her passing has profoundly impacted the Los Osos High School community. Principal Eric Cypher informed parents and students, expressing his sorrow in sharing the news about the senior student. He mentioned that Emily was a cherished member of the Varsity Dance Team and the Varsity Cheer Squad. The principal extended thoughts and prayers to her family as they mourn. The school has also provided counselors to support students and staff through this challenging period.

In the wake of the tragedy, Gold’s loved ones have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her family. The fundraising page’s description announces Emily Gold’s passing and calls on the community to unite in offering assistance to her family during this challenging time. The campaign emphasizes that all donations will go directly to the family to help with expenses. So far, the fundraiser has raised over $36,000.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the incident. Officer S. Gonzalez has been assigned to the case, and authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or has additional information to come forward.
