Harry Potter Star Dead at 89

Dame Maggie Smith, the acclaimed British actress known for her extraordinary performances in both film and television, has died at 89.

Smith, a two-time Academy Award winner, earned global recognition for her roles in “Harry Potter” as Professor Minerva McGonagall and “Downton Abbey” as the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess of Grantham. She passed away peacefully in a London hospital on Friday, September 27, 2024, surrounded by family, according to her two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens,

Smith’s illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which she received numerous accolades, including two Oscars, seven BAFTA awards, and a Tony. Her first Oscar win came in 1969 for her portrayal of the titular character in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” where she brought the complex, fiercely independent schoolteacher to life. A decade later, she earned her second Academy Award for her role in “California Suite” (1978), where her nuanced performance as an actress dealing with personal and professional struggles further cemented her reputation as one of the finest actors of her generation.

Though she enjoyed a long and celebrated career, it wasn’t until the later stages of her life that she gained widespread fame among younger generations. Her role as Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter “film series (2001–2011) introduced her to a new audience who admired her portrayal of the stern yet caring Hogwarts professor.

Daniel Radcliffe, known for his role in “Harry Potter,” shared his reflections on Smith. He recalled meeting her for the first time at nine years old while preparing for scenes in “David Copperfield,” his first acting role.

At the time, he knew little about Smith beyond that his parents were amazed he would be working with her and that she held the title of Dame. Radcliffe humorously remembered asking if he should address her as “Dame,” to which she laughed and told him not to be ridiculous. He recalled being nervous initially, but Smith quickly made him feel comfortable with her kindness. Radcliffe went on to work with her for a decade in the “Harry Potter” films.

He described Smith as having a sharp intellect, a witty sense of humor, and the ability to intimidate and charm. Radcliffe expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with her and emphasized that if the word “legend” applies to anyone in their industry, it was certainly Smith. He ended by thanking her for everything.

In the 2010s, her performance as the Dowager Countess in “Downton Abbey” further solidified her status as an international star.  co-star Hugh Bonneville, fondly recalled their experiences working with her. Bonneville described her as a true maverick with a razor-sharp wit, noting her ability to express deep emotion with just a look and reflecting on the profound influence she had on those around her.

Smith’s theatrical career was equally impressive. She performed in numerous stage productions in London’s West End and on Broadway. The National Theatre honored her as a true icon of her generation, acknowledging her remarkable intelligence, exceptional skill, and sharp wit. Despite her significant achievements, Smith maintained a private nature, frequently expressing that she didn’t like watching her work and considered herself to be very shy in her personal life.

Smith was also known for her resilience. In the 1980s, she overcame a diagnosis of Graves’ disease, and in the early 2000s, she bravely battled breast cancer while continuing to work on the “Harry Potter” films. Her ability to perform at the highest level, despite personal challenges, spoke to her dedication and love for her craft.

As news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from around the globe. King Charles called her a “national treasure,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak highlighted that she was “beloved by many for her immense talent.” Numerous co-stars and colleagues shared their sorrow and personal memories of the iconic actress on social media.

Smith leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren. Her family has requested privacy during this challenging time. Her sons expressed their grief over the loss of their mother, describing her as an “extraordinary woman” and offering thanks to the hospital staff for their compassion and care in her final days.

Maggie Smith’s legacy as one of the greatest actresses of her generation will continue to endure through her unforgettable performances, the inspiration she provided to future generations of actors, and her lasting influence on stage and screen.
