Barry Griffiths, a 57-year-old resident of Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales, died in July 2023 following an accidental kitchen incident. The inquest into his death, held on September 16, 2024 at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, revealed the unusual circumstances surrounding this event.

Griffiths was found dead in his assisted living residence on July 4, 2023, after concerns were raised about his well-being. He had not been seen for over a week.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees described the scene at the inquest: “The bottom drawer of the freezer had been left open and pulled forward in a position to access food items. On the work surface in the kitchen adjacent to the fridge freezer were two uncooked burgers, a knife, and a tea towel.”

The investigation concluded that Griffiths, who had restricted use of one arm following a stroke, had likely been attempting to separate frozen burgers using a knife when the accident occurred. The wound to his abdomen was approximately at the height of the work surface, supporting this theory.

Initially, Detective Sergeant Stephen Vaughan classified the death as unexplained rather than suicide. Griffiths’ personal belongings, including his mobile phone, wallet, and computer, were found in their usual places, suggesting no foul play.

The investigation faced challenges due to a delay in securing the crime scene. It took over a month for the police to fully secure Griffiths’ flat, resulting in the loss of potential evidence.

Despite these setbacks, investigators pieced together the events leading to Griffiths’ death. A post-mortem examination revealed that he had died from a sharp force injury, specifically a stab wound to the abdomen.

The police conducted a thorough investigation, including checks on Griffiths’ finances, digital devices, and CCTV footage from the area. They found no evidence of forced entry, theft, or conflict, and analysis of Griffiths’ devices revealed no indication of self-harm or planning for his death. They also found no evidence of third-party involvement, suicide, or any other suspicious circumstances.

Area Coroner Patricia Morgan determined that Griffiths’ death was most likely accidental and occurred while he was preparing frozen food for cooking. She acknowledged the challenging and distressing nature of the evidence and expressed gratitude for the patience shown during the investigation. Morgan also extended her condolences to family, friends, and those who knew the victim.

Griffiths was described by those who knew him as a “very private man.” He lived alone in supported accommodation, which may have contributed to the delay in discovering his body.
