A 32-year-old man in Pompano Beach, Florida was arrested and charged with premeditated murder after he allegedly ran over and killed the mother of his child during a heated dispute. The incident took place on the evening of September 21, 2024 and left another man injured.
The suspect, Edwin Amaya, is accused of intentionally using his Ford F-250 pickup truck to fatally strike 29-year-old Brenda Hernandez Amaya , a mother of three, following an argument over their shared two-year-old child.
According to investigators, Hernandez Amaya was walking near Southwest 8th Street with two of her children and her ex-husband, 32-year-old Omar Munguia-Henrique, at the time of the attack. Munguia-Henrique is the father of Brenda’s two older children. Both Hernandez Amaya and Munguia-Henrique were struck by the vehicle and dragged several feet.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) responded to the scene after receiving a call about a hit-and-run. Emergency responders found Hernandez Amaya critically injured, while Munguia-Henrique sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both were rushed to Broward Health North, where Hernandez Amaya was pronounced dead. Munguia-Henrique received medical treatment and is expected to recover.
Police said that the deadly incident occurred after a verbal altercation between Amaya and Hernandez Amaya intensified. Amaya had reportedly become enraged when Hernandez Amaya refused to allow him to take their child because he’d been drinking, leading him to back his truck toward her. In a statement, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed, “At some point during the argument, Amaya walked to his Ford F-250, backed up the truck, and then intentionally drove into Hernandez Amaya.”
Brenda’s 10-year-old daughter, Brittany Munguia, witnessed the event and shared that the suspect had expressed a desire to harm everyone who was there. She recalled her mother heading to dinner with her father and aunts when Amaya confronted them, using his vehicle to trap her mother against another car. Brittany explained that Amaya initially said he was leaving but then approached her mother in the truck, causing her to fall.
Amaya was arrested without incident and is currently held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail. During a court appearance on Monday, a judge denied his bond, and he now faces a charge of premeditated murder.
Anyone with additional information has been urged to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or provide a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org. Amaya, who has a history of domestic violence, could face life in prison if convicted.
