A promising young athlete’s future was abruptly halted last Friday, August 30, 2024, near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus. Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old national title-winning gymnast starting her senior year, was fatally shot in an off-campus apartment following an altercation with a man she knew.
Chad T. Richards, 23, of Love’s Park, Illinois, was arrested at the scene and is facing multiple charges in connection with Welsh’s death. The Whitewater Police Department has forwarded charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office.
According to police reports, officers responded to a call about a shooting victim at an apartment on the 100 block of Whitewater Street, approximately one mile east of the university’s main campus, late Friday evening. Upon arrival, they found Welsh dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
Welsh, a business management major from Plainfield, Illinois, was known for her athletic prowess and positive impact on the Warhawk community. She had recently clinched an individual national title on the vault at the NCAA Division III championships, showcasing her talent and dedication to the sport.
