Rising Pop Star Reveals Frightening Health Crisis

Chappell Roan, the 26-year-old singer behind hits like “Pink Pony Club,” recently revealed her diagnosis of severe depression, which she attributes to the sudden and overwhelming changes brought on by her soaring fame.

Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, Roan’s rapid rise to stardom has been marked by both success and personal cost. Her debut studio album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” propelled her into the spotlight, but that attention has come with significant challenges, particularly for her mental health.

Roan has been candid about her struggle with mental health, sharing in an interview on September 21, 2024 that she is now in therapy twice a week and sees a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with severe depression. While she initially didn’t feel “sad,” Roan explained that her symptoms included brain fog, forgetfulness, poor focus, and a general “lackluster viewpoint.” She shared that these symptoms reflect “every symptom of someone who’s severely depressed.”

The pressures of fame and the invasive behavior of some fans and media have compounded her struggles. Roan has voiced frustration over the “baggage” that now accompanies even simple activities, such as going to the park or attending yoga classes. As her fame has grown, she has had to hire security and prepare herself for the possibility of being stalked or harassed, a reality she now faces daily.

This disruption to her normal life has had a profound impact on Roan’s emotional health. In multiple open interviews, she explained how her fame has taken away much of the happiness and curiosity she once felt about the world. She described how, every time she enters her home, she becomes overwhelmed with emotion, often breaking down in tears, feeling either regret for the career path she chose or mourning the loss of the wonder and excitement she previously experienced in life.

Roan has been outspoken about the darker side of fame, frequently calling out fans and the media for inappropriate and invasive behavior. One particular incident on the red carpet of MTV Video Music Awards brought her significant attention when she confronted a disrespectful photographer. She lashed out, making it clear she wouldn’t be submissive to the photographer who told her to “shut the (expletive) up.” This viral moment was one of several occasions where Roan has publicly condemned the predatory actions of certain media members. She has been firm in her stance, stating that her complaints aren’t about her success but rather about being mistreated and abused by those who overstep boundaries.

The singer has found some comfort in connecting with other artists who have faced similar difficulties. She specifically talked about forming a bond with fellow singer Sabrina Carpenter, who has also dealt with the intense pressures of fame. Roan reflected on the fast-paced and overwhelming nature of stardom, observing that many young artists feel as though their lives are moving at a rapid pace, and they are struggling to keep up.

Roan has been candid about her past mental health challenges, having been diagnosed at 22 with bipolar disorder.

Despite the overwhelming nature of her current life, Roan remains committed to her music career. She draws energy and joy from performing in front of packed audiences, finding brief respite in the excitement of live shows. However, the challenges persist, and Roan continues to navigate the delicate balance between success and mental health.
